Watt Women Leonardo UK insight visit

On Wednesday the 12th of February this year the Watt Women society organised and ran a site visit to Leonardo UK's site in Edinburgh. Facilitated by Dr Carol Marsh, this session introduced 31 female students, with 12 different nationalities, from Heriot-Watt university to the world of Defence engineering and gave them remarkable insight into the workings of one of the biggest engineering companies operating in the UK.

Following an inspiring presentation the students were taken behind the scenes into one of Leonardo's biggest UK sites where their world-class products are taken from engineering concepts to being fully manufactured and assembled on the same site. Some of the highlights of the trip was seeing the EMC chamber where they test for sound wave interference on their components and seeing the progression over time of the radar technology they develop.

Overall the site visit inspired students by seeing where their degrees may lead them following university, and got them thinking about the dramatic technological advances local companies are making everyday.

Thanks to Leonardo for having us and Dr Carol Marsh for helping organise this great event for our members, find out more about Leonardo UK here.

These site visits are possible thanks to the Watt Women committee, in particular Siobhan Bevan who organised this event, and thanks to the support of Heriot-Watt University and our affiliated partners Equate Scotland and the Women in Engineering Society (WES).
